KTRU show 2.25.08

I played quite a bit of world music this time, although it wasn’t entirely intentional.

artist / song [album]
06:58 PM- staples, mavis / on my way [we'll never turn back] on the anti label.
————————————————————————————————————-
06:53 PM- last days / reasons to go [these places are now ruins] on the n5md label. The wind blows through the empty buildings in a ghost town. Someone is plaintively plucking a guitar and tapping piano keys with nostalgic melancholy. Melodrama aside, this is a lovely instrumental piece. The album has gotten some decent reviews as well.

06:48 PM- bobb trimble / through my eyes (hopeless as hell: d.o.a.) [iron curtain innocence] on the secretly canadian label.
————————————————————————————————————-
06:42 PM- marco mahler / study airports [design in quick rotation] on the self released label. OK so the guy needs to hire a web designer, but the music makes up for it. Likened to Nick Drake or Stephen Malkmus by the KTRUvian who reviewed the album, Mahler sings simple, tinkly songs with a breathy unaffectedness. This song in particular reminds me more of Jens Lekman than any other artist.

06:38 PM- vashti bunyan (fan site) / turning backs [lookaftering] on the fat cat/dicristina label. An album 35 years in the making? Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart and Adem lending their talents to Vashti Bunyan’s follow up to her 1970 debut, which is considered a major influence on psych folk.
06:35 PM- cesaria evora / sodade [adventures in afropea 3: telling stories to the sea] on the luaka bop label.
————————————————————————————————————-
06:27 PM- the (hypothetical) prophets / person to person [so young but so cold: underground french music 1977-1983] on the tigersushi label.
06:22 PM- adem / X is for kisses [love and other planets] on the domino label.
06:18 PM- dengue fever / tiger phone card [venus on earth] on the M80 label. Cambodian pop, meet psychedelic rock. Psychedelic rock, Cambodian pop.
————————————————————————————————————-
06:12 PM- comet iii / part 2 [astral voyager] on the fire museum label.
06:05 PM- caravana cubana / la comparsa [late night sessions] on the rhino label.
————————————————————————————————————-
05:59 PM- chicago afrobea project / crunch [chicago afrobeat project] on the self released label.
05:58 PM- fite, tim / oh-well [over the counter culture] on the s/r label.
————————————————————————————————————-
05:52 PM- the lisps / destiny [country doctor museum] on the self released label.
05:48 PM- ben + vesper / vow takers [all this could kill you] on the sounds familyre label.
05:44 PM- tunng / hands [good arrows] on the thrill jockey label. Acoustic guitar and synthesized beats. I believe the term folktronica has been used to describe them.
“He crawls like a rat inside her spine
It’s a passage to another world
He pulls on a coat of new born skin
And sends a secret message to that girl”
Creepy lyrics, awesome song.

05:40 PM- panda bear / search for delicious [person pitch] on the paw tracks label.
————————————————————————————————————-
05:35 PM- duke ellington / good queen bess [jazz tribune no 60 the indispensible duke ellington and the small groups] on the rca records label.
05:32 PM- tah-dahs / mix tape= love [le fun] on the undeniable label. Haha! I knew this guy when I lived in Austin in 1996. He’s was nuts then, wonder if he still is. The album is cheeky punk-pop, and this song references the holding the boom box in the air scene from “Say Anything”. Swoon.

05:28 PM- toots and the maytals / pain in my heart [light your light] on the concord label.
